Cheap ways to make use of solar panels on building without a battery?

Cheap ways to make use of solar panels on building without a battery? I’ve recently moved into a rental property which has solar panels feeding power into the building during the day. There’s no storage, so any excess is fed back to the grid, and my landlord receives a nice little payment every month. I pay for the energy I use outside daylight hours. There’s no gas supply to the property, so heating the rooms and water is all via electric. I’m wondering if there are any (cheap) ways I can store the energy produced during the day to be used in the evenings, or make use of the energy to reduce my outgoings on the property. I'm already doing things like putting a timer on the washing machine & dryer, using a slow-cooker for meals, heating the property during the day (which feels like a waste while I'm out of the property), but since I'm at work during daylight hours I figure most of my use is in the evenings (heating, cooking, TV, etc). I thought about getting a UPS, b

Question about battery/ a.c. coupling to grid tie system

Question about battery/ a.c. coupling to grid tie system My understanding is that in these systems, if the grid fails, the batteries take over to power the house. But what if I want to take advantage of TOU or other peak demand charges? I'm researching diy solar. Currently a microinverter 5.8kw system would end up costing under $1.5/w but I'd like to charge up a lion bank during the day, then discharge as the pv productions stops then charge up from the pv. Adding solar power to a greenhouse - question on battery chemistry and options

Adding solar power to a greenhouse - question on battery chemistry and options I have a small greenhouse (12*12) with solar powered vents. Today I run an extension cord out there in the winter but in the summer this will be a mowing hazard. I'm looking to set up a system that operates a pump (12V, 5.2A) for 2 hours a day, plus some lights (24W, 2-3 hours at most but unlikely to need pump on days I need light). Load per day will be 125Wh to 200Wh. Actual load will likely be less because if it's raining I won't need to run the irrigation pump for the garden, just in the greenhouse. And if it's cloudy for too many days in a row I can choose to not use the interior lights, and use my headlamp instead. Here's the two areas I need help with: 1- Battery Chemistry. If I use Li ion I can discharge them more fully, so I could get a 400W battery and know I could run the pump for the greenhouse for 3 days before having a problem. But Li ion batteries have a serious warning

Florida Solar install thoughts -- after hurricanes

Florida Solar install thoughts -- after hurricanes I have read through several opinions about energy generation including solar, LG/natural gas generators and gasoline/diesel. Previous post by vagrantprodigy07 prompted these thoughts. I have also experienced several hurricanes (never a Cat 5) and the annoying aftermath. So here's some rough numbers: We live in north central Florida. Our current house runs 50-70 kwh depending on air conditioner use, heat outside, etc. When we went through Irma, I used an old generator I've had for several years (5500 watt) that ran our freezer, well (220v) some lights and kept phones charged. It runs on gasoline. A generac LG generator to run every thing would be between 5-7k, as far as I can tell, not necessarily counting installation. A friend has a similar setup. It clicks on automatically and seamlessly. Solar for our stuff, without a battery, roughly 23k. Really several times what a generator would be. So why would I want solar inst

New house being built

New house being built I'm building a house in Lakeland, Florida, and want to put in solar panels and two Tesla power walls. The goals here are two fold. We were without power for about 10 days after Hurricane Irma, and I definitely don't want my wife to have to experience that again. Any money savings are a bonus really. Ideally I'd like to be running off of the panels or battery at all times, dipping into the grid only on rare occasions, hence the two power walls. When looking online it seems like I will need a system that is between 6 and 7 kw. Does that sound correct? The house is about 2000 sq ft of living space, and there are two adults living there. We do have 3 computers running 24x7, but they are fairly energy efficient systems. So I have two questions. One, what price would I be looking at for this? Two, does anyone know of a reputable installer in the area? submitted by /u/vagrantprodigy07 [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2FsgICz

Preparing for installation, where to find figures ? Hello i'm from Poland and i wanna make/buy/install 6kw installation on my roof. Over 3 months now i heard so many random things and figures from "the moon" i need to ask you guys. I live in southern part of Poland and i plan to do the installation. Over the year we get temperature from -5 to -10 in winter to +28-32 in summer (Rarely it goes beyond this). My roof is at 45 degree angle Can you answer my questions ? What is the "real" difference between Mono crystal and Poly crystal panels ? I received info Polycrystal panels generate power even on less sunny day and conditions and Mono crystal requires certain angle 36-45 degree and fully sunny day. I think this is bullshit but can someone elaborate ? What is average price of 6kw installation if you made one in your region. How much energy your X kw solar panel generated over the year and how do you recon real numbers look like. Some people claim they could

Currently work for a smaller solar firm in upstate NY, looking at a potential project in northeastern pennsylvania..have some questions for installers in the area. Hello! As the title says, currently living and working in upstate NY. However, I am from Northeastern PA and have a project that came up that we are potentially considering. Here are some basic details/questions: Description: The project is for a commercial site. It is a large distribution warehouse in the Wilkes-barre/Scranton area. Roof surface would allow for about 3MW of size. Utility is PPL. Customer is using about 5,000 - 7,000 kWh/DAY. Budget is very large and not a huge concern, fortunately. Questions: Is PA full net metering right now? Is there a limit to the total nameplate kW size for a system like this? Is there a % offset limit? Are there any crazy interconnection agreement limits? How is PPL with these types of projects? Do you have to have any "state" certifications to install? Or would

Faulty SolarEdge Inverter; SolarEdge shifting blame

Faulty SolarEdge Inverter; SolarEdge shifting blame I had a solar system installed on my house in Austin, TX at the end of October. Due to red tape in the city, it took two months for them to come and inspect it. My system was turned on a few days after Christmas. The system has 44 panels and a SolarEdge SE11400A (11KW) inverter. Ever since it was turned on, the inverter has had problems. Some days it behaves, some days it resets a few times, some days it resets 40+ times. Every time it resets it stays shut off for five minutes or so, then reboots, stays on for a few seconds or a few minutes, then shuts off again. Every time the error code is "2x24 DC Injection". The system has a CDMA connection for logging status, so presumably those events are being logged somewhere. I should also note that when the inverter is producing power but is in its "its going to fail soon" mode, it produces a loud ticking sounds, but the tick is so rapid it sounds like grinding. Also,

Solar Shade Analysis Tool

Solar Shade Analysis Tool Hey guys, I'm looking for a shade analysis app for iPhone that you guys would recommend for site visits. The kind that you scan from one side to the next facing south and then outline the obstructions. The alternative is a high quality (but probably high cost) manual solar shade analysis. If the manual tools are head and shoulders above the mobile apps I don't mind spending the extra cash. Renewable Energy Credits question

Renewable Energy Credits question Hoping this is the right place to come, since researching this is a little overwhelming/confusing. We have solar panels in New Jersey, at our home, and we were wondering where the best place to sell the RECs? Or would going thru a broker be the better option instead of trying to figure this out on our own? We've had the solar panels for a little over a year now, but are at a complete loss as to what to do. Any help, or point in the right direction would be much appreciated. submitted by /u/gguerin84 [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2oe5Oc5

Can someone help explain PG&E's true-up process?

Can someone help explain PG&E's true-up process? The Tesla guy didn't seem to have all of the information about this, and I've read about people getting shocked with their first bill. So... I am looking at a system that will generate 109% of my annual energy needs. But let's say something doesn't totally work out and I only cover 90%. That leaves me with, say, 300 kWh net energy taken from PG&E over the year. Amd, for convenience, let's say that exactly half of my energy is used during peak hours, and half of the generation occurs during peak hours. Tesla said I would have to switch to a TOU plan witb PG&E. So they add up my usage and find that I owe them for 300 kWh. What rate is that billed at? Do they split the difference based on usage between peak and off-peak rates, or do it all peak, or some weird third rate, or do they actually apply separate net metering taking into account usage and generation to create a net peak and net off-peak us

idea: low cost, high capacity, lossy storage for solar/wind generation using hydrogen

idea: low cost, high capacity, lossy storage for solar/wind generation using hydrogen I was brainstorming with a friend about what to do with excess power from renewable generating systems. It's becoming less desirable to shove it onto the grid now that incentives are expiring. I was trying to figure out ways to store more energy than you could with batteries, more cheaply, even if it was less efficient than using batteries. Well, if you have excess electricity, it's fairly easy if inefficient to turn it into hydrogen. You can compress hydrogen, but it won't liquefy at higher than cryogenic temperatures so you'd need high pressures to store a lot in a small space. But what if you had more space to work with? I calculated that a cylindrical balloon 15 feet in diameter and 20 feet tall would store less than 6 lbs of hydrogen gas at standard temperature and pressure, but that would produce 100 KWH of power (at 100% efficiency). You obviously wouldn't get 100% effici

Help with going off grid for holiday lights

Help with going off grid for holiday lights I have a municipality in NY that has holiday lights on a separate meter. They just upgraded to LEDs, but it still isn't on any automatic timer or anything. As far as I understand the person who arrives in the morning to work unplugs/turns off the lights. It looks like yearly consumption is less than 2000 kwh (closer to 1800). Since they have to pay for a meter regardless of no consumption beause no lights it works out to being around $0.30/kwh. I figured this would be an easy application for solar + storage. If someone could point me in the direction of how to do the calculations for battery size + solar PV size and where to buy such equipment that would be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/slothfulkomrade [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2C5Fcma

Question about Tesla setup

Question about Tesla setup I am in the final stages of getting a solar system with Tesla but had a disturbing exchange with my rep last night. I asked if, in the event the grid went down, would my panels still charge the batteries, and hence my house. The answer was no, and the explanation was that "the grid powers the panels". This makes no sense to me at all, and basically makes the system near worthless to me as that was my primary reason for wanting the system. I thought the sun powered the panels which in turn charged the batteries. can someone explain this me? Is there some other alternative I should be looking at? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! I want to be able to charge my batteries regardless of the status of the grid. Thanks and sorry if this is a stupid question or the wrong forum. submitted by /u/godspoken [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2o5iK4b

grid-assisted synonym?

grid-assisted synonym? So wholesale solar kinda coined the term grid-assisted and I can't really find it anywhere else. In their explanation they describe exactly what I want from my inverter. Does not feed solar powered electricity back to the grid. Does not need to be approved by your Utility because it will not be using the grid for feedback. Allows you to charge batteries with grid electricity OR with solar power. My trouble is that the inverters cost $2500. I can buy all the batteries or all the solar panels for that price. I'm going to reach out to both of them today (just got the email from utility yesterday) and see what the deal is. Has anyone else had this happen, and is there something that can be done?
