Question about battery/ a.c. coupling to grid tie system

My understanding is that in these systems, if the grid fails, the batteries take over to power the house.

But what if I want to take advantage of TOU or other peak demand charges?

I'm researching diy solar. Currently a microinverter 5.8kw system would end up costing under $1.5/w but I'd like to charge up a lion bank during the day, then discharge as the pv productions stops then charge up from the pv.

Is this only going to be done with some custom, expensive controller?
