Reconfigure solar panel to change output voltage Can I reconfigure a 72 cell (6 x 12) panel to work as two 36 cell panels (in parallel) for a 12 volt system? I want to connect them in parallel for maximum partial shade tolerance. Some panels have zero information on how many diodes they have and some have diode count but no information about how they're wired. SunRun questions...perhaps too open-ended A friend near me in central CA just got solar installed by SunRun via Costco. He is not a shill but strongly recommended them. There are some perks with Costco Executive but I have broader questions. In particular, our roof faces east/west. I have heard that it is less efficient, so I'm wondering if it will be cheaper in the end. Our electric bill is insane and our house has R19 insulation so we apparently use a lot of power. A few newbie questions I've been researching adding solar to my house for a few days and have some questions I couldn't find definitive answers to. Noob. I have a simple question hopefully someone can answer? I have a small 6v gw370 worm motor, and I have some solar landscape lights from home depot that don't work. I took them apart, and the solar panels (3"x5") are producing about 2.5v each, and 0.02 amps. The lights also have a 3.2v 1amp rechargeable battery. I put three panels in series which is producing about 7.5v and 6 amps. However, the small motor wont run on the solar yet will from just a single battery. Is it an issue with the in-rush current? I wire the solar panels and then tried to use a battery to start the motor and have the solar panels continue to power, but once I remove the small 3.2v battery it stops. Question about battery swelling I am just starting to look into getting a small solar setup (200w to start and upgrading to 400w as soon as I can) for an expedition trailer and I have an opportunity to get 4 three year old Interstate GC2-XHD-UTL for free, but they are all swollen to some extent. They have been on a scissor lift at work and have been charged a lot, and probably overcharged. We also recently noticed the water level was down so we refilled them. I have read that overcharging and low water will both cause swelling of the battery, but my question is whether or not these batteries would be worth the trouble of hauling and storing them until I piece together the rest of system or would the swelling make them worthless? Angle of roof - how much does it matter? I'm looking into buying a new home and trying to figure out how viable the houses I'm looking at would be for solar power. Both houses I'm looking at are facing north, and as far as I can tell have a decent amount of area on the south side of the house to fit solar panels. But I'm curious how much the angle of the roofs matter. My intuition tells me that the ideal would be to have the panels angled the same as the latitude of the house, so like 32.something degrees in this case. One house is built in the 1950s and has a relatively flat roof. Way, way less than 32 degrees (like maybe 10 degrees? Not sure). The other house seems to have a much steeper roof.. maybe 50 degrees? Solar Panel Question If a solar panel says 300 watts but has a cell efficiency of 21.65 and a module efficiency of 18.33% then do the efficiency numbers matter more or the watts? Or are the watts and the efficiency indicating the same thing? I read and understood it as they rate the panels based on 1 square meter with 1000 watts of light shining on it if it produces 300 watts that means an efficiency of 30% but I guess this isn't always the case? Will this system work? Hello, I am in the middle of setting up a solar system for my van. I already have all of the supplies except for some fuses and ring terminals. I have not wired anything yet, but my plan is as follows: 2x 100W panels on the roof run parallel with branch connectors. I have 10awg wire and will run it around 7 feet with an 18amp fuse to connect to a 20amp mppt charge controller. From the charge controller I will run 10awg wire with a 20amp fuse to connect to a 100ah LiFEPo4 deep cycle battery. From the battery I will run a small waterpump using 18awg wire and a 4amp fuse. I will also run a 300w inverter from the battery using 10awg wire and a 40amp fuse. That is the basis for my plan, but I do have some questions. Do I need a ground anywhere? What type of fuses would be best? And does this sound relatively safe? I am 19 and not an electrician so I am not sure if I am missing anything or if there could be any complications. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

With yesterday's news, how many are pivoting their business to Energy Storage? Right now an ESS >150kW with 2hrs is sold at about $500/kWh. Which means the payback is <10yrs when electricity rates are over 0.15$/kWh. So storing energy instead of selling it back to the grid at whole sale already makes sense without incentive. If the price of modules go up, it will make more sense to store the energy then selling it back at wholesale prices. Also, AC coupled system means that you could go back to previous customer and sell an upgrade. Selecting solar panels in a hurricane prone area I grew up in South Florida and I just returned from helping cleanup at my moms house down there. She discussed wanting to put in solar panels so I’ve been researching it a bit for her. One thing I’m skeptical of is attaching anything to the roof. We lost our roof in 2004 through the combination of 3 hurricanes and had to rebuild the house due to that so I don’t want to do anything that increases the risk. I wanted to check on here as to what people thought of the roof panel instillation for high winds (sheet metal roof) or how easy they would be to take down and store inside as part of hurricane preparation. The other option I’m looking into is putting panels on the ground. I don’t think we would be able to put in as many (avoid blocking the view) but they wouldn’t be attached to the roof and would be much easier to take down before a storm. battery bank to inverter? Hello, I am in the middle of a diy solar project for my van. I am going to run 10 gauge from the panels to the charge controller, then 10 gauge from the controller to the battery. I bought a 300W inverter from amazon that came with some thin wires, maybe 16 gauge, and in the manual it says to use a 40 amp fuse. My plan is to get new 8 gauge wire (or would 10 gauge suffice), to handle the 40 amp fuse, and use that to connect the inverter to the battery. On amazon a guy said to use a 50amp fuse as the inverter is rated to 600w surge so it would need to be 50amp to reach full potential as 600w/12v=50a. I am really just confused and do not want to light my van on fire. Any help explaining would be appreciated, and I can upload pics if necessary.
