Can someone help me with this quote for a new home? They're suggesting Panasonic or Hyundai panels, which I'm not familiar with My parents are building a new home in Hawaii and they just sent me the quote from the solar installer. The quote consists of 72 Panasonic N325 panels (325W each), 3 Solar Edge 7600H inverters, and 3 PowerWall 2.0 batteries. With an 82% derate factor and 5.8 Sun Peak Hours, they estimate that'll create 110 kW/day (it's a big house). The cost is $50.7k after tax credits. They also gave a quote using 82 Hyundai PERL Black series panels (285W each), which comes to $44.5k after tax credits. I'm not really familiar with either of these panels' efficiency or warranty over the long term. Panasonic includes labor and shipping as part of their warranty while Hyundai does not, and I'm not sure about SunPower. The prices do not include a critical load panel, which I know they want to have. Do these quotes seem reasonable? Which one would y

Company Production Guarantee worth it or just marketing?

Company Production Guarantee worth it or just marketing? As the title suggests, been getting quotes and some companies offer a production guarantee. Where as if the system they design under-performs their calculations they will refund me some $/w to make up for the difference. One company even went further to say that they would come out and move panels around to get their promised production. My main question is if these are all just gimmicks to give me peace of mind or if they are actually a good thing to get. I would assume with the amount of technology and data that goes into designing these systems, the likelihood of me needing this seem slim. But with any warranty like this, I guess it just provides peace of mind. What are your thoughts? submitted by /u/Nortdort [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2BAlPxZ

NW Ohioan, new to solar, having trouble with the math

NW Ohioan, new to solar, having trouble with the math Hello, Wondering if someone near me can give some examples of actual daylight and generation values. First, let me give some context. I'm hoping to buy a solar generator + battery storage, and want to see what size generator I'd need for 100% generation. Based on the last year of consumption, my daily average consumption is 11kW. (highest peak being 14kW) That means that on average I consume (at most) 0.58kWh on my worst day Also, in the worst-case, on Dec21st, there are only 9h10m of sunlight. So in those 9 hours, I'd need to generate 14kW in order to be sustainable. But I realize that isn't realistic at all. The Sun isn't full brightness at 7am sharp, it scales up. The panels would be fixed, and therefore not at 100% optimal angle all the time. Batteries heat up as they are charged, so there's energy lost there. How on Earth can I calculate what ##kWh I would need in order to be sustainable? Thanks in

Looking for seller / installer in Eastern Canada

Looking for seller / installer in Eastern Canada Briefly - My finances and solar technology seem to be at the place where I am ready to take the plunge. My location is here Google maps satellite view shows a huge simple roof line above the shade trees which I think is a good candidate for roof mounted panels. [1] The home was new in 2003, so the current shingled roof is almost 15 years old. **Should I redo my roof BEFORE placing solar panels, I'm looking for wisdom that will minimize maintenance cost and effort. Friend's OutBack system is d-e-a-d dead. He's looking to me for options. I'm looking to you for input! In brief, the batteries are shot, and the system is rendered inoperable as a result. He's looking for options to get up and running again. Here are the details: It is a grid-tied system. There are two arrays feeding into two charge controllers. Each array has 9 panels, in three strings of three. One has 216W panels, while the other uses 235W panels. The charge controllers are OutBack MX60. The inverter is, I believe, a GTFX or a GVFX. He is NOT NEEDING BATTERY BACKUP ANYMORE. I think the estimate to replace the existing batteries is about $4000. Here are some general options, as I see them: • replace inverter/charge controllers/battery with something like an SMA SB 6000 ($600ish) • replace inverter/charge controllers/battery with 18 Enphase micro inverters (about $900) • replace inverter/charge controllers/battery with 18 SolarEdge optimizers and a SE3800A-US (

As Mexican Solar Auction Prices Scrape Bottom, Will Quality be Threatened? The latest round of solar auctions in Mexico yielded an unheard-of average price of US $20.57 per MW, including a $17.70 per MW bid by Enel, a coup for the government. However, as developers and EPCs scramble to under-bid one another in the current market, the price eventually will erode the quality that is deliverable. How to remove frame rubbing residue on the glass from mis-handled stacking of panels?

How to remove frame rubbing residue on the glass from mis-handled stacking of panels? Per the title. I've got a pretty significant marring on the glass of a particular panel - it's not a scratch, precisely - but it's rubbed off (aluminum?) from another panel being dragged across it during re-stacking in the warehouse. I'm wondering 2 things: (A) how best to remove that rubbing (I've found instructions to not use sodium hydroxide (lye) that could normally dissolve the aluminum (assuming it is aluminum)). (B) what kind of math /power am I loosing on this if it gets installed? The rubbing is over a single cell, and i have no idea what kind of "shade" the mar will cause. What do you guys know? EDIT: also - any you guys ever put a meter on a panel that has that rubbing on it to see what we're really loosing? submitted by /u/Rocksteady2R [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2iYZ5Af

Since I will be grandfathered into the current time of use/tiered system for 5 years (in san diego with SDG&E) I am going to wait on a battery. I do , however, want to set my self up for the future. Looking at current technology and it looks like you either go with a DC coupled system (LG Chem) or an AC coupled system (Powerwall). One company suggested that I get a hybrid inverter (StorEdge) so that in 5 years time I will be ready to go. This, however, would lock me into a DC battery. In contrast to the LG Chem battery, the Powerwall 2 is AC coupled and I could use a standard SE7600 inverter (along with DC optimizers). Much less expensive than the StorEdge inverter. I wanted to get some feedback on which technology is most likely to be advanced in the next 5 years or so. I understand that a DC coupled battery is currently more efficient (less conversions

How to calculate if how much energy can 1 unit of solar panel make at my location? I've tried this but I don't know how accurate it is, because I recently moved to an all-year-long very sunny location with quite high temperature and it shows my old location (which was not nearly as sunny and hot) would provide more energy. Because as I see it's not m². So how to start and calculate all of these? What stats matter (sunny hours and I guess the "power" of the sun)? I've read the wiki but it didn't really take me far. Question about which solar panel to go for

Question about which solar panel to go for Hey guys i posted a while back about my estimates and i got another one today and decided to go with their company my main question is which way to go. The one proposals panels were Q Cell 300’s and the other Panasonic 325’s. The panasonic is only a 1500 dollar bump up. I am leaning on going with the Panasonics what do you guys think. It will be 23 panels in total. Total system with Q cell was in the 21k range panasonic was around 23k. I don’t mind paying for the Panasonic’s if its worth it. Payment is made directly from customer to Business 1. -Building permits are required for us to do these installations, The licensed general contractor with Business 2 pulls the permits for these installations to be done. -Licensed contractor and employees of Business 2 install the solar equipment, and the licensed general contractor holds general liability insurance for the install and insures that all work done is up to code and passes inspection. Why the Bifurcation of an Industry’s Supply and Demand is Bad for Everyone

Why the Bifurcation of an Industry’s Supply and Demand is Bad for Everyone “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way,” Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina .  In the solar industry, strong markets are alike in that they have incentives, subsidies and/or mandates to drive growth and adoption but also a fair amount of political and economic risk and every weak or collapsing market is alike in that it no longer has incentives, subsidies and/or mandates to drive it and its political and/or economic risk has become a reality. A weak market is the mirror image of a strong one that is, everything is seen in reverse. In solar, a leading market share receives more notice than the low-to-negative margins that go along with it. For example, solar lease etc., company Sunrun is being touted for passing SolarCity in terms of its market share even as it racks — pardon the pun — up losses. The company reported losses from operations of $130.7 million and net losses of $180.9

China on Pace for Record Solar Capacity as Forecasts Jump

China on Pace for Record Solar Capacity as Forecasts Jump China, the world’s biggest carbon emitter, is poised to install a record amount of solar-power capacity this year, prompting researchers to boost forecasts as much as 80 percent. About 54 gigawatts will be put in place this year, Bloomberg New Energy Finance said Monday, raising a  forecast of more than 30 gigawatts made in July. That amount of additional capacity would likely surpass all the solar energy generated in Japan in 2017. http://ift.tt/2zVW9OG

Options for trenching?

Options for trenching? I need to upgrade my service to 200amps (from 100) for my solar install + new EV needs. I got a quote from an electrician a few months ago and it was going to be about 10k to run a new line. It's 22 feet from my main panel to the service drop (straight under a stamped concrete driveway).
