Less Well Known Autonomous Car Stocks Car manufacturers have fully embraced self-driving or autonomous cars.  It is not because they have heard a loud clamor for such technology from consumers.  No, automakers are keen on the idea because manufacture of self-driving cars could help them overcome the short comings of highly cyclical sales pattern associated with its car dependent upon a single driver.  In other words, they are in it for themselves whether consumers benefit or not. If consumers are not so important, at least investors should benefit. Besides the car manufacturers there are a few smaller companies that can give investors a taste of the self-driving car phenomenon. Good deal or no?

Good deal or no? Hi, my family and I are looking to get solar panels. Met with a sales rep from Nexus Solar who gave us a deal of almost $35K for 24 solar panels. We're looking to do the solar panel and roof combo for $52.5K. The price is for 25 year warranty for all 24 solar panels + roofing job. 30% of that would be deducted from the federal solar tax credit. We would lock into a 20-year plan of $202 monthly payments with an est. annual production of 10,911 kwh. Not sure if the price point looks good or not and/or what other companies to reach out to. Located in the suburbs of the Bay Area, CA. Feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks! Details about the panels: *300 Wp 60 cell monocrystalline *Enphase Microinverters & Combiner submitted by /u/KSJmeister [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2Ao6xOa

Can't find solar water heating systems

Can't find solar water heating systems A few years ago I helped install a solar water heating system for a friend. It consisted of four approximately 2 ft. x 2 ft. panels that the water ran through. They used the existing water heater tank for storage and the kit came with a solar powered pump that attached to the drain on the tank to circulate the water. I saw the kits on Amazon and ebay. I've been looking today to order a setup, but can't seem to find anything like it on Amazon, ebay or even google. What gives? Are they not being manufactured any longer? submitted by /u/abaway [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2LAxAKk

RV solar design input needed

RV solar design input needed Planning to do a major renovation on our 1996 Tiffin Allegro Bus. We currently have only two house batteries and no inverter in our system. Planning to start with six 110W solar panels with room for more. I'll be using flexible solar panels due to weight concerns. The bus has a max weight of 26000 and I don't want to add too much extra. Glass to flexible weight difference is substantial. So with the possibility of additional solar, I am starting with the Victron 150/85 rather than building for just the 660W of solar power. Thinking of breaking up the 6 panels into two groups, with each run in series which will bring the 3 to 54V and 6.11A and then combining those two sets of three into a parallel connection to bring power up to 108V and 12.22A to charge 6 100Ah house batteries. (Hoping for lithium, but may start with lead acid due to cost) Shore power and generator will be on an automatic generator start triggered off of the battery monitor. Haven

I know this is basic but... I bought a house with a solar panel and a hot water tank. Do I need to do anything to maintain it? Does it need an annual service like a boiler? Should I do anything in winter when it's not used? For info, it's in Spain and I probably get hot water 10-11 months of the year. Manufacturers Going All Out for Self-driving Car Tech

Image
Manufacturers Going All Out for Self-driving Car Tech There is a clutch of self-driving cars and cars with autonomous driving features on the market today.  Drivers just cannot seem to get enough of them.  Apparently, the idea of zooming down the highway with little to no responsibility holds considerable appeal.  Then again, maybe it is the novelty of the idea that will eventually give way to the next fad. In August 2018, Cox Automotive revealed the results of a survey that found fewer Americans are embracing self-driving technology than previously thought.  A surprising 49% of respondents said they would NEVER own a fully-autonomous car.  This is up from 30% naysayers two years ago. Views on the safety potential in self-driving cars have shifted as well.  The Cox survey found that 45% of the respondents in the recent survey believe the roads will be safer with self-driving cars.  The confidence level was 63% two years ago. Why have automotive manufacturers put so much time, effort

Sense Monitor CTs in Enphase Combiner Box?

Sense Monitor CTs in Enphase Combiner Box? I am trying to set up a Sense monitor with the solar CTs. My problem is that I live in a multi family, and the solar is in a separately metered panel (with loads). Can I put the CTs in the Enphase combiner in order to avoid readings from the other loads in the same panel as the PV backfeed breaker? Sense offers extension leads now so I can connect to the combiner on the other side of the basement. I'm more looking to use it for measuring instantaneous output on my arrays since I'm on cellular right now and only get readings every 6 hours on Enlighten. That and Enlighten isn't the best software in my opinion. I get net metered 50% of the solar and the other unit gets 50% so I'm guessing it will mess with the Sense usage reports, but eventually I will be taking getting 100% of the credit. submitted by /u/hvdc123 [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2SlRziA

Any PV Troubleshooters here?

Any PV Troubleshooters here? I have a 4KW 16 panel system with a SolarEdge HD Wave Inverter that has been "stuck" in night mode since I discovered the 20 AMP AC Breaker had tripped. I reset the breaker and the inverter has not made any power since. A service tech concluded that the inverter will need to be RMA'd and replaced. It kinda looks like the wound coils at the top of inverter may have some darkening, but no other signs of black death or smells. The tech suspected a possible issue with the utility power may have attributed, but I have my doubts. My question is how to understand some the results of my own troubleshooting, I'm familiar enough with AC systems, but don't know much how Power Optimizers work in a system like this. The inverter says it's only getting 1-2 volts DC, which initially I thought was an indicator of a power optimizer string issue. I confirmed the reading with my multimeter at the load side of the DC disconnect. With the DC discon

Battery bank options for residential solar?

Battery bank options for residential solar? I had a 9.6kW system installed two years ago. So far it has provided slightly less energy than we've used (we have an old zonal heating system I need to update to improve efficiency), I've received the government tax rebate for the installation, and I'm awaiting my first incentive check. Overall I'm very happy with the investment and think I made the right choice. My next project is to install a battery bank. I'd like to have a setup that will work for ~2 days assuming minimal load -- if the power is "out", I won't be turning on unnecessary devices. This is mostly for the fridge, heat, and so on. Several people have recommended looking into the Tesla Powerwall, but I am sure there are alternatives out there. My baseline load when the heat is not on is around 300Wh, if that helps at all. submitted by /u/InternetPersonv6 [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2CxY7VC

LGchem battery limit in warm climates

LGchem battery limit in warm climates I was reading battery spec sheets and was surprised to find that the popular LGchem RESU10H battery has a recommended operating tremperature upper limit of just 86 degrees (F). That is a lot lower than the upper operating temperature limit for all the other batteries I could find, including AGM and Lithium both with and without active cooling like the LG. That limit is so low that there is no place in Florida one could be used. I live in NE FLorida and summer high temperatures easily reach 95F for weeks at a time. I am sure inside my garage it is warmer than that. The LGchem battery is the one best supported by the SolarEdge inverters so are those not being installed in Florida either? The Tesla Powerwall looks similar but it really isn't, since the Tesla uses AC coupling with its own built in inverter/charger while the LG uses DC coupling. submitted by /u/greenbluewhite [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2SiQic9

10 Solar Hopes For 2019

Image
10 Solar Hopes For 2019 by Paula Mints Ten things to hope for in 2019, and their odds of coming true. 1) Accelerated focus on climate change: It’s not enough to talk climate change, or promise action – action must be taken and though it will take lifestyle changes now, and will have an economic impact now, the cost of attempting to survive climate change is higher. Make no mistake, it’s survival, not reversal. Odds: Low – when the bill for change comes due even true believers will balk, when a change in behavior is required, most find this difficult, and when the entrenched technology or industry feels pressure it fights back. 2) Net metering laws/incentives globally to encourage residential and small commercial PV: Slowly developing as energy independence (primarily due to the promise of storage) becomes more enticing. Odds : High – energy independence and controlling costs hits home with electricity consumers and they are willing to be vocal and vote for it. 3) Virtual net me

Solar thermal for pool heating

Solar thermal for pool heating Generally, I've been taught to use the thin plastic black tube stuff for solar thermal, and leave the expensive vacuum tubes and copper pipes for higher temperatures domestic hot water. As the volumes of water and thermal energy plus costs just made more sense. Is this still the case? What's a vacuum tube gonna cost and what can it do is a place like Palm Springs? Customer of mine has a big gas bill to heat his pool - what can be done with an 8ft tall x 100ft wide wall? http://www.apricus.com/upload/userfiles/downloads/ETC_Collector_Overview_USA.pdf Domestic hot water focused hardware, can I repurpose and use what I got even if the cost is more? submitted by /u/infocsg [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2SffNuR

Advice Needed- Wisconsin Cabin Quote

Advice Needed- Wisconsin Cabin Quote Hey Redditors, My dad is looking into purchasing a roof-mounted, 20 panel, 7,200 W DC system on a cabin that is in central Wisco. All Energy Solar has quoted him 23,500$ for a turnkey setup with 20 JA Solar 360 Panels, and Enphase inverter, which has 7,200 W DC. This price does not include a 7000$ federal tax credit and a 2000$ Focus on Energy Grant. Just wanted to see if this quote passes your guys' sniff test, or if you have any other suggestions. Any piece of advice is appreciated-- thanks a ton in advance for any help. submitted by /u/caloobboobron [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2EBfAy6

Notes from the Solar Underground: Is China’s Domestic Solar Industry Too Big To Fail?

Notes from the Solar Underground: Is China’s Domestic Solar Industry Too Big To Fail? Mid-2018 China’s central government threw the entire PV industry, including observers and pundits, into a panic by making drastic changes to its PV deployment that included temporarily halting utility scale deployment, lowering the FiT, shifting economic responsibility to the provinces and, in a related move, attempting (one-more-time) to control the country’s debt problem. Forecasts were lowered, and gloom descended on top of the entire solar industry. https://ift.tt/2R3lNcT

How do you estimate solar panel system production?

How do you estimate solar panel system production? Different solar installers are recommending different system sizes for my house. How do I know which one to go with? My annual consumption is 8,500 kWh. Some vendors say a 5.25 kW system will meet my needs, some say 6 kW, some say 7.2 kW. When I use the inputs below in PVWatts I need a 7.2 kW system.
