Any experience with cheap low power solar load controllers?

Any experience with cheap low power solar load controllers? Looking to solar power a small pond pump that's far too far away from mains to get conventional power to. Nothing fancy, just enough power to circulate the water a bit to prevent mosquitoes from forming. I'm thinking that a small 10W 12V pump should be sufficient. So I was thinking about getting a small 20W 12V panel, but I'm a bit concerned that the 12V panels are actually Voc 21V and Vmpp of 17V, so I might be burning up the pump if I direct drive it. I'm also concerned that the large inrush current to get a motor running means you can't actually start the pump without a battery. So enter the charge controller with a small sealed lead-acid battery. There seem to be zillions of these on the market, but it's really hard to tell the difference or what I should be looking for. I'm likely to just run the pump all day during the sun (no need to run it all night). I just need the battery to start the

Is it possible to keep charging a fully charged 20,000 mA power bank with a 9v 3W solar panel for a week straight..? i have a 5 volt, 20,000 mA capacity power bank: https://uae.souq.com/ae-en/veger-20000mah-safe-efficient-fashion-3-usb-output-power-bank-for-smart-phones-v100-black-color-11996007/i/ a 9V, 3 Watts, 0.33 A solar panel: https://www.enfsolar.com/pv/panel-datasheet/Polycrystalline/25971 i'm using the battery to power three arduino unos. They power three things which all add up to 4.15 Watts approx (not including the arduinos themselves) So my question is, if i keep charging the powerbank with the solar panel, while the power bank is powering the 3 arduinos with 4.15 W power, the solar panel charging will help the power bank's battery stay charged for longer, but how long until it finishes exactly..? a few days or maybe a week? can someone please tell me how to calculate it? i'll be forever grateful submitted by /u/music2169 [visit reddit] [comments] http

Washinton, DC row house solar array proposal, and challenges.

Washinton, DC row house solar array proposal, and challenges. I am considering a new solar array for our home. After getting a quote I feel less hopeful and discouraged again from initial considerations and thoughts. The sales person and company seem to have worked the math backwards factoring in the federal credits/SRECs and what they can charge rather than cost + profit. They also scoffed at the suggestion to itemize the bill, even parts and labor split out. I also suggested that the each panel installed was about $1700 and got told you can't think of it that way as another vendor made the same statement about kWh some time ago; just set a bad tone for the confersation without a good explanation of why. At $100/month avg. bill for the last 5 years they quoted us 7.56kW system with a net cost of $15,500. This would be 101% of our electric usage. They mentioned the many benefits of the SunPower x22 panels @ 360w/panel and their warranty which are tangible but maybe inflated. I wan

I am considering buying a home in San Diego with a ppa through SolarCity/Tesla that has 18yrs left on the contract.

I am considering buying a home in San Diego with a ppa through SolarCity/Tesla that has 18yrs left on the contract. The ppa seems fairly standard from what I have read about them. It has an initial electrical rate of 15cents per kwh and started in 2016 the rate we pay will increase by 2.9% per year. The installed panels have an estimated production of 15700ish kwhr per year. Should I avoid buying this house because of the ppa or is this not a good deal? What types of questions should I ask the Tesla guy when he calls to discuss the contract? Benefits of ground mount- cooler than a rooftop?

Benefits of ground mount- cooler than a rooftop? Hey y'all, I was reading about how the different seasons affect solar , and with the temperature effect on production in summer, I wondered if ground-mount panels benefit at all from staying cooler. The roof is an awfully hot place, but maybe the panels would get just as hot on a ground mount? After all, they'd be in the same sun. I just would think that having more air circulation instead of being inches away from the attic, which collects a lot of heat in the non-shaded-by-panels area, might help. Then again, you'd lose the benefits of shading your roof, which I hear can keep cooling costs lower somewhat. What are folks experiences with ground mount pros and cons? Removing snow and cleaning, if you want to, would be easier, but you lose some yard area. Is it just a better option all around if you have the space? submitted by /u/ElectricNed [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2HDxb7m

Blocking diodes on parallel strings in large arrays

Blocking diodes on parallel strings in large arrays I'm setting up a large 6.5 kW array composed of 6 parallel strings each with 3 series panels for a per-string VOC of ~145V. I am aware that blocking diodes are generally only considered necessary when panels are directly connected to the batteries (mine will be going to a quality charge controller of course) to prevent backfeed from the battery, and are considered not worth it even then in 12v systems because of the 0.5v drop. In my situation, should blocking diodes be installed on each parallel string to prevent them backfeeding each other in cases of partial shading? Is this even a concern? I'm thinking each shaded string (no blocking diodes) might manage to hold a fairly high voltage (preventing backfeed anyway) and just not have production current behind it. submitted by /u/Quantum_Ripple [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2HofRaa

There’s Hydrogen In That There Biogas

Image
There’s Hydrogen In That There Biogas I don’t suppose that anyone actually dreams of hydrogen, but in the bio-economy there just isn’t quite enough of it and we read about it and sometimes think about it so much that we might as well be dreaming about it. For those newer to the field, one of the problems of using biomass to make a fuel is that a carbohydrate contains around 53% oxygen by weight and needs about 16% more hydrogen that it contains to make a hydrocarbon fuel. That’s one of the reasons that biofuels are often esters (such as biodiesel) or alcohols (such as ethanol), because those two both utilize less hydrogen and more oxygen than a hydrocarbon fuel. But there are limits on blending — which lead to problems like the E10 saturation point, and that can put a cap on the volumes of biofuels that can be supplied, regardless of demand or price. From time to time here in Digestville we look longingly at anaerobic digesters and the lovely renewable methane and heat that they pr

Help starting a small business

Help starting a small business Hello, i'm from a town in the midwest (OK) that has no solar installation companies in any surrounding areas outside the large metro area. For about the past year or so I've been saving to start a solar business. I have enough capital and collateral that I should have no trouble securing a business loan. I'd like to start out small doing the install with maybe 1 employee, and satisfying any requirements of needing an electricians sign off with my electrician father in law or brother in law. However hiring a competent experienced manager and letting him teach me the ropes so we can than have morph into 2 install teams is also a possibility. I'm an auto tech so complicated electronics don't phase me, i'm sure I could pick it up quickly. I'm not sure wether I should go in feet first and fumble through an install at my own home so I have something to submit in my business plan and to have something to show clients during estimat

DC Powered Air Conditioner Unit - Experiences?

DC Powered Air Conditioner Unit - Experiences? Greetings All, Can anyone chime in with their experiences with a DC powered A/C units? I have a small shed (10x16) that I would like to convert to an office...It probably would be cheaper to trench a 120v line out to it...but then I'd have to worry about permits...and it wouldn't be as much "fun" There appears to be a few options out there - 48v-72v mini splits, 12v+48v RV/Camper Roof mounted units, etc...the used market for RV/Camper roof mounts seem plentiful and much more affordable - any major cons on this route? I was thinking if I setup the system for 48v or 72v it should simplify the system - panels ($89 home depot specials) set in series + a bunch of salvaged/junkyard deep cycle batteries in series...with enough batteries, a good controller and the batteries housed in the (A/C'ed shed - set to 80F when not in use) - the batteries should last a while? All this would need to be calculated of course...but loo

SCE Time of Use Base Line Credit

SCE Time of Use Base Line Credit I recently got solar and switched to TOU D-A ( Plan Details ). Part of the rate plan is a baseline Credit of 8 cents per kilowatt up to your baseline amount. The first few months this worked fine for me but since the days have gotten longer and I was net negative last month, instead of a credit i was charged 8 cents a kilowatt for my -220 kilowatts. I was under the assumption that i would get no credit but instead i am being charged for over producing. I called SCE three times and finally a manger told me that this indeed this was correct and because i was generating power i would be charged for the credit. This sounds outrageous and incentives people to actually use more power. Has anyone else with SCE dealt with this and is it true that if you are net negative instead of a credit you will be charged up to your baseline amount? submitted by /u/wattatime [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2F0fn3S

Standing Seam Metal Roof is the best match for Roof mounted Solar Panels?

Standing Seam Metal Roof is the best match for Roof mounted Solar Panels? Greetings All, In approx 3-7 years it'll be time to redo my asphalt roof, so I've got some time to figure what I would really want to replace it with. I am located in South Florida with fairly low pitched roofs - so really hot & humid half the year, with the occasional Cat 5 (150mph+) winds blowing through...asphalt roofs generally don't last as long down here as compared to more northern climates... With Solar Panels having 25-30 year warranties, it makes sense to have a roof that will last as long or longer - I wouldn't (or the next owner) want to have to go through the hassle to remove the panels just to redo the roof again in 13-17 years with asphalt shingles and then install the panels back on. So it seems metal is the way to go? Tile & Slate have long life spans as well, but I am concerned about them getting damaged during high winds or if a heavy tree branch hits them? As far a

Investing in Biopolymers

Image
Investing in Biopolymers Last month  Eastman Chemical Company (EMN:  NYSE)  announced an expansion of its urethane extrusion line at one of its specialty chemical plants. This one located near Martinsville, Virginia makes paint protection films and window films.  Urethane is perfect to protect surfaces in a home or business.  It is not brittle like plastic, but has excellent tolerance for grease and oils.  When exposed to the elements it does not rot or degrade over time like rubber. Shareholders likely cheered the development in Virginia for potential addition to market share.  Eastman grabbed $9.6 billion in sales from the specialty chemicals market in 2017, earning $1.4 billion in net income or $9.47 in earnings per share. Anyone who has waded through even just a few of posts here, knows I hold a special interest in companies that generate cash.  In 2017, Eastman turned a whopping 17.3% of sales into operating cash flow.  With so much cash sloshing around Eastman is able to offer a
