Building your own utility-style horizontal axis tracker: Has anyone done this? Or who can I buy one from?

Building your own utility-style horizontal axis tracker: Has anyone done this? Or who can I buy one from? As I'm working on home solar plans for next year, I'm recognizing that I'm going to need a ground mount system, because for a combination of reasons (setbacks, shading, load ratings, angle, and smallish roof to start with), mounting on my roof isn't likely to work. If I do mount stuff up there, I'll still need to supplement with ground mount, and, well, the effort difference between "doing some ground mount" and "doing all ground mount" isn't that high. I live on a nice south facing hill, and an area to install the panels on isn't a big deal. But, since I'd like my power production to match use somewhat better (in expectation of changes to the net metering agreement my utility company is working on), which implies morning and evening production instead of middle-of-day production. And that, by my thinking, is best served by putt

When we get solar panels from utility company-connected service provider, do we ever use our own generated power?

When we get solar panels from utility company-connected service provider, do we ever use our own generated power? ConEdison (our local energy provider in USA) contacted me about solar energy options and connected me to a company that brokers deals and installation "Pick My Solar". From initial conversation I had a feeling that we never actually use the solar power we generate from the panels they install on our roofs (roughly $15k) instead, the power generated by the solars continuously feed the grid, and in the meantime we use the power from the grid, and if there is a balance (depending on which way) either we pay the add'l usage at per kWh or they credit us per kWh. Is this correct understanding of the system? I always thought we'd get some batteries so we can reserve our own power, and anything not used, or above the batteries, we can sell back to ConEdison. Could someone help me understand how the system works with panels? Thank you in advance. submitted b

What's the current state of bifacial modules?

What's the current state of bifacial modules? I'm looking into some ground mount designs for home solar, and one thing that's come up recently that I don't know that much about are bifacial modules. They seem to now be a thing that's in limited general availability, though solar installers talk them up a bit in my experience. A few specific questions: Will they produce identical power from the opposite sides, given identical illumination, or is there a very definite "front side" and "back side"? Has anyone experimented with a north-south facing "fin" of panels? It seems this would optimize power production far closer to actual use patterns, if one didn't have shading issues (which I wouldn't). Who actually sells them? I can find only a few vendors online. How are they rated? Are they rated under STC test conditions of illumination from a single side, such that they would often be producing far more than rated power? Th

Planning for post-net-metering: How do you design?

Planning for post-net-metering: How do you design? For the sake of this post, assume as a given that, at some point, the current net-metering arrangements ("I give you a kWh when I find convenient, you give me a kWh when I find convenient") are likely to change over the next decades. I'm not sure exactly how they are going to change, and it's likely to differ somewhat, but let's assume that they're going to change. How do you design a system for that, if you're aiming for a 30-50 year lifespan (yes, I know by 50 years, production will be down, and I'll probably just add another string to make it up)? My thoughts, currently, are that a moderately batteried DC coupled system (with generator) is probably the ideal. It allows you to ride through outages, it allows you to export to the grid when the battery is full, and if you're subject to altered rules, you can alter the system operation to deal with the new rate schedules. I think we'll likel

micro solar charger for 3.7 phone battery.

micro solar charger for 3.7 phone battery. Can I take a small solar panel that folds out and have it charge a standard 3.7 phone battery? Example: buy the Harbor Freight battery charger (12V DC 1.5 watt) https://www.harborfreight.com/15-watt-solar-battery-charger-68692.html You take it out of the package, cut it into sections so that it folds/unfolds. When your 3.7 battery is dead, you unfold and start charging. For some $13, you have a charger. It's output is 12V DC and your battery is 3.7V DC What if you break the panel in 1/2 or 1/3 so you get 4V DC. Note: I assume you can break these panels, I guess they are a solar film over plastic and connect in sections. So you cut this into 1/3 and for $13 you get 3 charging panels. Q. Will it work? Is there a general consensus or is it specific to the panel? If it specific to the panel, what is that called in the datasheet, and what would be the algorithm to calculate it?
