Swiss Solar Decathlon House Scores a Perfect 100 in Engineering

The Swiss Team took first place in engineering with a perfect score of 100 possible points. For the Engineering Contest, each competing house was evaluated by a group of prominent engineers who determined which house best exemplifies excellence in innovation, system functionality, energy efficiency, system reliability, and documentation through their project manual and construction drawings.

Bob Dixon, presenting the award said, “The jury believes the first-place house in the Engineering Contest offers comprehensive performance modeling that sports clear graphs, detailed explanations and a variety of representations. The quality of the thermal envelope is exceptional and carefully calibrated to the target climate with very good resistance to heat flow, a solid focus on airtightness, and high-quality components such as triple-glazed windows and sliding doors.”

Any experience with cheap low power solar load controllers? Looking to solar power a small pond pump that's far too far away from mains to get conventional power to. Nothing fancy, just enough power to circulate the water a bit to prevent mosquitoes from forming. I'm thinking that a small 10W 12V pump should be sufficient. So I was thinking about getting a small 20W 12V panel, but I'm a bit concerned that the 12V panels are actually Voc 21V and Vmpp of 17V, so I might be burning up the pump if I direct drive it. I'm also concerned that the large inrush current to get a motor running means you can't actually start the pump without a battery. So enter the charge controller with a small sealed lead-acid battery. There seem to be zillions of these on the market, but it's really hard to tell the difference or what I should be looking for. Probably a bad idea: $89 100W solar Panel to Car Jump Starter to 12v Garage Door opener? Greetings All, With the $89 100w Solar Panel deal available - I was thinking a cheap, though mostly easier way to get a powered garage door for a remote shed on a property would be to get Solar Panel - have the output go to a Car Jump Starter and connect it Garage Door Opener that can be backup powered by a 12v battery and maybe some Light sensing LED lights around the perimeter of the shed? I was thinking the Car Jumpstarter would have the right electronics to make sure the battery wouldn't be over charged and the lithium batteries should last longer in high temp areas? Would probably be better off with a good 12v SLA battery? This Shed is located in a hot and humid area, SLA car batteries in my area seldom make it past 3-4 years before needing to be replaced... just sold a deal for $27 a watt well, almost, anyways. So a lady calls up asking for a "commercial quote" for what turns out to be a 3 panel array on top of a new building. she initially spoke to my colleague; he spent half an hour trying to explain that it wasn't a project we were interested in. she is angry and determined and will not take "no thanks" for an answer. so, to get her off the phone he tells her to email him the files she has (design sheets/ blueprints for the firehouse). three days later we're in the office and he's going on about how this crazy Russian lady won't stop calling and texting his cell phone, so after he explains what's going on I offer to help him out. when I call her we go back and forth for about 10 minutes, with her demanding a quote and asking why no one will give her one. she is angry and Russian and not interested in any of my explanations. eventually I got bored of arguing with her so I said I'd take a loo...
