Why is having solar installed so expensive?

Why is having solar installed so expensive?

I recently posted for the first time about a somewhat sketchy deal and decided not to move forward with them. On my last post people told me the price was way too high.

Today we have another local company out for a quote and it's another quote around the same really high price. He told me all the products that would be in the system and they add up to under $7k unless I found something totally off when I searched on Google. Why then is it over $20k (just got the final quote - $24k) for to have the system installed? A little detail about this quote:

  • 5.2kW system w/ 18 panels
  • Panels are Axitec Solar 290W
  • Sunny Boy 3000 Inverter

Am I just contacting the wrong companies? Is there something else I should look for when calling about quotes?

ETA: The final price we ended up with was $17k before the 30% tax credit.
