Looking at a home this week with solar panels already installed (NY). Some questions.

Good morning all,

My wife and are starting our first time home buying process and viewing homes. I am a very big proponent of solar and green energy in general. No matter what house we buy it has to be in a good position to utilize solar panels.

One house on our list already had solar panels installed on the roof. The listing says they are already “owned outright.”

I have some questions I was hoping you guys could answer or send me to the right place to find an answer.

If they are already paid off does that mean they are older and less effective?

My understanding is that in NY the energy generated goes to the main grid and then we receive a credit from the energy company, is his correct?

Does having solar panels on a roof mean the roof will need to be replaced sooner/harder more expensive to replace?

Should I ask if there is a warranty on the panels?

Is there a gigawatt level (?) I should be looking for?

How do I know the panels actually work?

Any specific questions I should ask the owner?

Thank you.
